Things to do in Dublin this weekend

A standard Dublin sporting weekend has more big-ground action per square mile than almost any other European capital, and the city splits cleanly across a handful of corridors from Friday evening. Up in Drumcondra, Croke Park (82,300) runs the heaviest GAA Championship dates through the summer, with Drumcondra and Connolly Stations on the Luas Red Line dropping crowds toward the ground and the surrounding North Strand pubs — the Hill 16, Quinn's, the Big Tree, Gaffney's — booked solid from early afternoon.

Across the river in Ballsbridge, the Aviva Stadium (51,700) on Lansdowne Road runs Six Nations and Autumn International rugby plus Ireland soccer internationals, with the Lansdowne Road DART station dropping crowds at the gate. Leinster Rugby's United Rugby Championship home dates fill the RDS Arena in Ballsbridge, and the bigger European fixtures move to the Aviva.

On the Northside, the League of Ireland clubs play their weekend cards — Bohemians at Dalymount Park in Phibsborough, Shelbourne at Tolka Park in Drumcondra, St Patrick's Athletic over at Richmond Park in Inchicore. Add a GAA double-header or an Ireland rugby fixture and the north or south city centre absorbs an extra 50,000 people on a Saturday afternoon.

Sundays carry the All-Ireland Finals and provincial Championship throw-ins, with the long pub session in Drumcondra or the Liberties after the final whistle.
