How the ticket industry works

The sports ticket industry operates across three distinct tiers, each with a different pricing structure and a different relationship between buyer and seller. Understanding these tiers is the single most useful thing a fan can do before spending money on tickets.

Tier 1 — Primary market

The primary market is where tickets are sold for the first time. Ticketmaster is often the official primary ticketing platform for teams, venues, and event organizers. When you buy a primary ticket, you are purchasing from inventory released by the event organizer at a price they control. The upfront price generally includes face value plus required fees, with venue-specific facility charges, delivery choices, and taxes varying by event and location.

Why wholesale prices can be lower

The price advantage of a wholesale marketplace comes from marketplace structure: more sellers, more comparable listings, and more pressure to move inventory before a game starts.
