About the San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks joined the NHL in 1991 and play at SAP Center in San Jose. Known for Shark Tank atmosphere, playoff heartbreaks, and the 2016 Stanley Cup Final run led by Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau.

The San Jose Sharks joined the NHL in 1991 as the Bay Area's first top-league hockey franchise and built one of the sport's most beloved arenas — SAP Center, nicknamed "The Shark Tank" — into a consistently sold-out playoff destination for three decades. Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Evgeni Nabokov, and later Joe Pavelski led teams that were perennial Western Conference contenders, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2016 before falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Sharks are undergoing a youth rebuild in the mid-2020s, centering around Macklin Celebrini and other top draft picks. Despite being technically in San Jose, the Sharks serve the entire Bay Area market and compete with Warriors, 49ers, Giants, A's, and Raiders for the attention of one of North America's most sports-rich cities.
