Rogers Arena is Vancouver’s downtown indoor amphitheatre, the home of the Vancouver Canucks and the largest concert room on Canada’s West Coast. The building sits on Griffiths Way at the south edge of downtown, wedged between BC Place, False Creek and the Stadium-Chinatown SkyTrain station, and has been the focal point of major hockey and touring music in British Columbia since it opened in 1995 as General Motors Place. The arena was renamed Rogers Arena in the summer of 2010 when Rogers Communications took over the naming rights from GM, and locals still occasionally call it the Garage out of habit. It seats 18,910 for hockey and expands to roughly 19,700 for end-stage concerts, with a bowl that wraps the ice in tight 100-, 200- and 300-level rings so that even the upper sections feel close to the action. The Canucks have called the building home since day one, the Vancouver Grizzlies of the NBA played here for their entire short Canadian life, the WNBA and NBA preseason have run through Vancouver here, and the venue carried Olympic ice hockey during the 2010 Winter Games as Canada Hockey Place. On the touring side the arena anchors any major North American run that crosses into Western Canada, from arena rock and pop residencies to hip-hop, country, comedy and family ice shows. Promoters Live Nation, AEG Presents and Feld Entertainment all build their Pacific Northwest swings around it. It is the room every Vancouver promoter measures the city by, and the one venue every visiting headliner has to clear before the West Coast considers a tour complete.
