About Capital One Arena tickets

Capital One Arena is Washington, D.C.’s downtown indoor venue, the home of the NHL Washington Capitals and the NBA Washington Wizards, and the anchor of the Penn Quarter and Chinatown neighborhoods in the heart of the city. The building sits at 601 F Street NW, directly above the Gallery Place–Chinatown Metrorail station, a few blocks from the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. It opened in December 1997 as MCI Center, was renamed Verizon Center in 2006, and took the Capital One Arena name in 2017. Built largely with private financing by late Wizards owner Abe Pollin, the arena is widely credited with revitalizing a then-struggling stretch of downtown D.C., drawing restaurants, theaters and the Chinatown Friendship Archway crowds back to the blocks around 7th and F Streets. The room turns over from hardwood to ice and back through the October-to-April pro season, then leans into a heavy concert and family-show calendar the rest of the year. The Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup run behind Alex Ovechkin is the building’s defining sports memory, and the arena is also a regular host of Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball and big Washington Mystics WNBA dates. Today the venue is owned and operated by Ted Leonsis’s Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which committed to keeping the teams downtown under a major multi-year modernization of the building.

Capital One Arena seats roughly 20,356 for Washington Wizards basketball and about 18,573 for Washington Capitals hockey, the difference coming from the ice surface, player benches and the seating configuration each sport uses. Concert capacity varies with the stage setup — an end-stage show with the floor sold as seats or general admission can approach the basketball number, while in-the-round and broadcast configurations reduce it to make room for production, camera platforms and the rigging compound. Georgetown basketball uses the same basketball-mode capacity as the Wizards.
