About the Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards won the NBA championship in 1978 and have been home to legends including Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld, and Gilbert Arenas. They share Capital One Arena with the Capitals in Penn Quarter, Washington DC.

The Washington Wizards franchise traces its roots to the Chicago Packers in 1961, relocating through Baltimore as the Bullets before arriving in Washington. The 1978 championship — won over the Seattle SuperSonics and led by Finals MVP Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes — remains the franchise's defining moment. The team later played through the Bullets name until a 1997 rebrand to Wizards. A remarkable chapter came when Michael Jordan, the greatest player in history, returned to play for Washington from 2001 to 2003. Capital One Arena in Penn Quarter, shared with the NHL's Capitals, is one of the most conveniently located arenas in American sports — steps from multiple Metro lines. The young Wizards roster led by Kyle Kuzma is working to build the next competitive era for DC basketball.

Inside a Washington Wizards home game

Expect a full house of basketball energy when the Washington Wizards host at Capital One Arena, the 18,573-seat arena. Capital One Arena opened in 1997 and is a lively place to watch the game. The rivalry with the Knicks (4 recorded meetings) lifts the atmosphere a notch and pushes ticket demand higher. Doors usually open well before the first whistle, so arriving 45 minutes early leaves time for security and concessions. Most basketball games run about 2–3 hours.
